Thanks for your information on sewing machine manuals. My children bought a white sewing machine model 1514 for me at a garage sale recently and it didn't come with a manual. After spending an hour or so online looking for a manual I stumbled on to your site. A lucky thing for me! Within a few minutes I had printed a copy of the needed manual. Thanks so much. Ruth

I've grumbled under my breath about that most times I glance at the comics. What a waste of that public space! Just never seemed quite important enough to take action, but once you laid out the grim reality... well you ought to send that to a journalist. It would make a fascinating article in the NYtimes and might just shake loose some editors.

Speaking of how animation can "illustrate" a point, check this out-

@Gordon: Hmm. Interesting point about laziness. I'm not sure how that fits in here though. As for my "central point", well, not sure I had much of one. I was just sharing the minor insight I had about the symmetry of the economic spectrum - that there are forces at work at either end that keep tend to keep people at those end points. I've known (and thought about) the forces at the upper end for quite a while, but I haven't given much consideration to the low end. So to read about a theory that puts some meet on the "poor get poorer" adage was interesting to me.

I don't figure the pan handler to be stupid. Lazy maybe. Consider this recent encounter with a panhandler who had a sign which said "Anything will help"

I offered the panhandler 3 bags of aluminum cans, each worth $5-$6. Panhandler refuesed stating that he was banned from the adjacent store premises. I countered that he could redeem the cans at the store across the street. Panhandler said that was too far to walk. I left the 3 bags of cans at the redemption center where they were promptly picked up and redeemed by a "homeless person".

After re-reading my comments, I don't know whether the panhandler is stupid or not. I don't know whether my comments are relevent to the original post, but then again, I haven't yet captured the central point of the original post. I'll keep trying.

Funniest thing EVER. I saw a girl who obviously just got her fixie go down one of the hills here in San Francisco and smash the ground (she didn't get hurt).

Charles, thanks for taking the time to comment here. As I was writing this post, I was very much aware that all of my information was second hand (and that I'm not "a professional in the field"). I hope I've treated your work fairly.

I just now noticed that you've replied to the critique I saw on Amazon, and have updated my post accordingly.

From the author. It's true that some reviewers said there wasn't enough concrete data (meaning mainly microbehavioral simulations like you get in the Nobel prize work of Kahneman and Tversy) in The Persistence of Poverty. No mystery there, if you know the history of economics. The conventional wisdom--that the marginal utility of consumption is diminishing for poor people no less than for rich people--was embraced on the basis of nothing more than introspective evidence, such as the common experience that the second ice-cream cone (movie, trip to Europe) in a short time delivers less satisfaction than the first. But THEN economists got an attack of science-envy and started denying the validity of introspective experience as evidence. So NOW they reject introspective evidence (the bee-sting example and many others detailed in my book) as a valid way to REFUTE a hypothesis (diminishing marginal utility) that they ADOPTED a hundred and fifty years ago on the basis of...introspective evidence! Go figure.

Years ago I wrote the features editor of the Raleigh News & Observer begging her to axe Peanuts, which hasn't elicited a laugh from me in decades. She responded that she, too, found Peanuts dull, but if she cut it, greybeards would come out of the woodwork to complain. The zombification of the comics page prevents new artists and writers from emerging. Its too bad that more folks don't have the guts to do a Watersson and retire at their peak, making room for new strips.

My solution: replace the CELLS inside your devices' battery packs. Open up the "packs" and for most household consumer devices, you'll find that they are generally composed of ordinary AAA NiMH batteries. Just get some new batteries and solder them together, replicating the physical configuration and contacts of the original packs. Note that some devices can't properly charge newer, higher capacity (amp-hour) batteries, so select cheaper, lower-capacity replacements. In many cases, I don't even bother with the cases, but just tape the batteries together; the tape substitutes for the original shrink-tubing and makes the whole package fit.
