We are well and truely into winter here in Bend, and that’s a wonderful thing. We’ve actually had quite a bit of snowfall to start things off, and as a result the scenery is just spectacular. I’ve been taking pictures as the urge strikes, and finally got around to putting a nifty little photo album together. It’s a collage of scenes from our winter lives here, starting with one of the more unique phenomenons – freezing fog.
Freezing fog is a result of a rather bizarre temperature inversion we get. The air will be quite calm, and a low-lying bank of clouds will rest in the local valleys. Unfortunately this keeps us from getting any sun here in town so it gets downright chilly. Meanwhile up at higher elevations the skies are clear, sunny, and … well… not exactly warm, but at least not as bone-chilling. But the cool thing about this is that at night, the fog will drift through town gently freezing to everything it comes in contact with. Very, very pretty. (But a word to the wise: the stuff tastes horrible. No idea why.)
Anyhow, the album also has pictures of some deer romping around, ice and snow on the Deschutes, and one or two of us out snowshoeing. Fun stuff, all!
